Gore turned pro after the 2004 season as a redshirt Junior. With concerns about his knee, Gore was drafted in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the 49ers.

Despite 49 fewer carries than 49ers leading ball carrier Kevan Barlow, Gore led the 49ers in rushing yards with 608 during his rookie season. By his second season, Barlow was gone and Gore took over as the primary ball carrier.

Gore had the best season of his career in 2006. He ran for 1,695 yards and eight touchdowns and had 61 receptions for 485 yards and another touchdown.

Gore has produced another seven 1,000 yard seasons. He currently leads all active rushers with 13,065 yards. Another 1,000-yard season will push Gore into the top five all-time in career rushing yards.

Gore needs just 1,037 yards rushing to pass Curtis Martin for fourth all-time. He needs 2,200 yards rushing during the remainder of his career to pass Barry Sanders and move into third place all-time. A 1,000-yard season this year will seemingly all but cement Gore’s place in Canton.

What could eventually hinder chances is Gore has never been considered one of the top five backs in the game. He has never been named All-Pro and only been named to five Pro-Bowl teams. With 74 career touchdowns, Gore currently ranks 24th all-time.

If the committee that elects the Hall of Fame players looks at the whole of Gore’s career he should be a lock.
