M.J. Stewart is one of best shutdown cornerbacks in the nation. He considered turning pro after last season. He ultimately decided to return to Chapel Hill for the 2017 season. CanesWarning’s partner site KeepingitHeel reported that Stewart is the second ranked cornerback prospect in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Stewart led the Tar Heel pass defense that was first in the ACC last season. They allowed only 180 yards per game. There is a strong likelihood we will see Stewart matched up with Miami Hurricanes star receiver Ahmmon Richards.

Stewart finished last season with 66 three and a half tackles for loss, 11 passes defended, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Miami is going to need one of the unproven receivers to step up against UNC with Stewart likely to be tasked with shutting down Richards.

Pro Football Focus projects Stewart as a first-team All-American at the slot corner this season.

Last season against the Miami Hurricanes Stewart had two tackles, one tackle for loss, and two passes defended. The Tar Heels Defense held Brad Kaaya and the Miami passing game to just 224 yards, a 50 percent completion percentage and 13 points.
