The game was decided on an epic Miami 22-play 80-yard drive. With Miami leading 17-10 and the Hurricanes facing third and 43 inside their ten-yard line, Miami had one of the most iconic plays in its history.
Miami quarterback Craig Erickson dropped back and hit Randall Hill on a fly pattern for a first down and Miami was on its way.
Two loss Florida State’s win over Miami was enough to place them ahead of the one loss Hurricanes. The Hurricanes win over Notre Dame vaulted them up to fourth in the polls. Colorado, Alabama and Michigan were ahead of Miami in the polls.
Miami defeated Alabama 33-25 in the Sugar. Notre Dame defeated Colorado 21-6 in the Orange. The Hurricanes win and Buffaloes loss to the Fighting Irish elevated Miami to number one. It was Miami’s third title in five seasons.
A year later Miami and Notre Dame would play for the last time until 2010 at Soldier Field in Chicago.
