Notre Dame radio analyst and former player Allen Pinkett sparked a controversy in 2012 when he said the Fighting Irish needed criminals to succeed. Appearing on the then McNeil and Speigel show on WSCR-AM in Chicago Pinkett said:

"“I’ve always felt like, to have a successful team, you gotta have a few bad citizens on the team…I think Notre Dame is growing because maybe they have some guys that are doing something worthy of a suspension, which creates edge on the football team. You can’t have a football team full of choir boys. You get your butt kicked if you have a team full of choir boys. You gotta have a little bit of edge, but the coach has to be the dictator and ultimate ruler.”"

In 2010 Lizzy Seeburg who attended nearby St. Mary’s College, committed suicide ten days after alleging that a Notre Dame player (later revealed to former Irish linebacker Prince Shembo) sexually assaulted her.

Notre Dame’s investigation of the assault raised a lot of red flags. Seeburg’s parents questioned the investigation publically. Seeburg’s father Tom appeared on the now-defunct sports talk Chicago radio station the Game.
