So how do you break the chains of run game ineffectiveness? The answer is not that simple. Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi is a known as a defensive mastermind and has been able to beat highly ranked teams before. Give credit there.

Narduzzi employed aggressive secondary practices and got them engaged early on in run defense. The first play of the game showed two safeties within ten yards of the line of scrimmage. Safeties from that launch position are often labeled as “free hitters.”

Offensive lineman have blocking responsibilities but realistically cannot block everyone on every single play. Sometimes you get out-leveraged with numbers. Sometimes its OK because you expect your halfback to make a guy miss. There is a myriad of intricacies in a run game.

Manny Diaz knows how to shut down a run game too. Notre Dame was the most potent running attack in America and got literally bamboozled by the Miami Hurricanes defense. You saw many of the same strategies with defensive backs playing extremely down hill.

Great defensive coordinators know how to take things away from you on offense. Against Notre Dame, Diaz dared quarterback Brandon Wimbush to pass and win the game. Narduzzi dared Rosier to pass and win the game. Neither could.
