The rebuild of the Miami Hurricanes began on an October fall day in Miami Gardens in 2015. Clemson’s 58-0 dismantling of Miami led to the firing of Al Golden and began the process that led to Mark Richt returning to his alma mater.

Golden entered the game against Clemson on that fateful fall day with a 32-24 record as the Miami Hurricanes Head Coach. Banners flew around Hard Rock Stadium that stated “Our pilot has as many top 25 wins, #FireAlGolden. It was already a popular mantra for the Miami Hurricanes faithful.

Clemson led that afternoon 42-0 at halftime. The lead was so decisive that Clemson had a snack of orange slices at halftime before heading to the locker room. Golden was fired following the game and tight end coach Larry Scott was named the interim Head Coach. Scott was ironically the Offensive Coordinator and tight end coach at Tennessee the last two seasons.

The week following the loss to Clemson was extremely emotional for the Hurricanes. In addition to Golden’s departure, Miami defensive back Artie Burns lost his mother. Miami was able to regroup and would eventually win the “Miracle in Durham game.”

Miami finished the regular season winning four of their last five games under Scott. They lost their final game of the season in the Sun Bowl.
