Miami also forced four turnovers in the game. Three of those were interceptions, including a Trajan Bandy pick six just before halftime that basically iced the game.

Notre Dame was one of only two teams that finished ahead of the Miami Hurricanes in the polls that did not play in a New Years Six bowl game. TCU who won the Alamo Bowl was the other. That was questionable as well. The Horned Frogs defeated 20th ranked Stanford 39-37. Auburn who lost to Central Florida in the Peach Bowl to finish with four losses also finished ahead of Miami.

If we go by an impartial ranking system like ESPN’s Football Power Index were the Hurricanes overrated this season? Up until Miami lost at Pittsburgh many of the national experts were questioning just how good Miami was this season. The Hurricanes finished 17th in the FPI.

The other 11 schools that played in a New Year’s Six Bowl game were all ranked ahead of the Miami Hurricanes. The other schools that finished ahead of Miami were Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, TCU, Stanford and LSU.

Some of this is baffling. LSU who lost to Troy and Notre Dame finished ahead of Miami. The Tigers only win over a ranked opponent this season was over four loss Auburn. In addition to the loses to Troy and Notre Dame, LSU lost by 30 to Mississippi State.
