Miami Hurricanes offense took a step back in 2017

The 2017 Miami Hurricanes season was their most successful since 2003 by most measures. The offense took a step back from where it was in 2016.

In 2016 the Miami Hurricanes averaged 34.3 points per game and averaged over 425 yards in offense. That ranked 37th and 60th nationally. The Hurricanes slipped to 29.1 points per game and 403.7 total yards per game this season.

Malik Rosier did a good job leading Miami to a 10-3 record and it’s first ACC Coastal Division title. He came through in the clutch in October when Miami won their four games by a total of 18 points. Rosier gave the Miami Hurricanes a boost in the running game from the quarterback position.

In spite of their exploits with Rosier under center, the Hurricanes passing game, like the most of the rest of the offense took a step back in 2017. Averaging 274.2 passing yards per game in 2016, the Hurricanes fell to 241.8 yards this season.

There were many factors that contributed to the significant fall off in the passing game. Rosier’s ability to run took a lot of pressure off what he needed to accomplish throwing the football.

They lost two of their best receivers from 2016 and injuries both played a role in the decline Hurricanes passing game this season. Kaaya’s accuracy in the passing game also played a huge role. He completed 62 percent of his passes in 2016. Rosier was at 53 percent this past season.
