The game will be one of contrasting styles. The Miami Hurricanes are one of the nation’s best defensive teams. Miami is 21st nationally allowing 65.1 points per game. The Hurricanes are in the top 35 nationally in several defensive categories. They have not been as good defensively in conference play.

In ACC games Miami’s defensive points allowed rises to 76.1 points per game. That’s tenth in the conference. It’s a number that Jim Larranaga cannot be happy with.Miami is going to have to drastically improve their defense to win at Virginia Tech.

Now they have to be able to defend without their best defender for the next six weeks. Guard Bruce Brown will likely be out through the ACC Tournament after surgery on his left foot.

They played well defensively against Pittsburgh, but Jim Larranaga had to be concerned with how they played against Florida State. Miami lost 103-94 in overtime in Tallahassee. The Seminoles shot 60 percent from the floor and made 47.4 percent of their three-point attempts in the win.
