Diaz had previously worked with the linebackers. That will give him a chance to focus more on the overall defense and just work with Quarterman and the inside linebackers that back him up. Patke is grateful for the opportunity that Richt and Diaz are giving him.

"“It’s a blessing…To become a full-time assistant coach here at Miami under Coach Richt and Coach Diaz, it’s a godsend. Working with our players and seeing the success we had this year, and being able to continue to build on that, it’s a dream come true. “When I came to Coral Gables, what really stood out to me was the history of this program and the love the city has for the Hurricanes. You learn to love it just as much. The amount of talent you can get here – great, great players that truly love Miami – is what sets this program apart.”"

There is a possibility that Patke will lose either Pinckney, McCloud or both after next season. Entering their third season of college football they will be eligible to enter the NFL Draft after next season.

Pinckney and McCloud improved their numbers nearly across the board from their Freshmen to Sophomore seasons. With a coach dedicated to their position without other responsibilities that should help them in 2018. Pinckney had 61 tackles 7.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in 2016. That improved to 68 11.0 and 3.5 this past season.
