When Will Miami Hurricanes hire a new DL Coach?
While hosting his all-star Dad’s Day event at Hard Rock Stadium Saturday Miami Hurricanes Head Coach Mark Richt discussed a variety of topics. One of those is who will replace departed Defensive Line Coach Craig Kuligowski and when.
Kuligowski left for Alabama earlier this week after spending two seasons with Richt as the Miami Hurricanes Defensive Line Coach. Kuligowski is the first coach to depart Richt’s original Miami staff.
He led a defensive line that went back to the aggressive up the field style that the Hurricanes had when winning National Championships. Miami led the nation in sacks in 2017 averaging 3.38 per game. They finished fourth in tackles for loss nationally averaging 8.5 per game.
Whomever Richt and Defensive Coordinator Manny Diaz select to replace Kuligowski is likely to employ the same assertive, attack up the field style that Kuligowski does.
Richt told reporters he wants to have a new Defensive Line Coach in place by the time spring practice starts next month. Miami has to rebuild its defensive line this offseason.
The Hurricanes lost ends Trent Harris and Chad Thomas and starting tackles R.J. McIntosh and Kendrick Norton plus key reserve Anthony Moten. Richt told reporters there is a lot of interest to replace Kuligowski but no decision is imminent.
"“By the time spring ball starts [on March 20], I definitely want somebody by then…We’re not starting another three weeks or so. When it comes to hiring people, the goal is not to be the fastest but to be right. I want to make sure we bring in the right person. “The good news is there is a massive amount of people that want to be here. It’s a great destination job. We have a lot of people that are really interested even though it’s an awkward time of the year…"
