"This late in the spring, usually everybody is settled in and it’s over. Because the NFL cherry-picked Alabama’s guy, Bama cherry-picked our guy, now we’re going to find the best guy for the job. There are a lot of great men out there who want this job. “I’ve got to make sure we’re bringing in the right person as far as his ability to coach, as far as the type of person he is, his character, can he recruit and does he really want to do things the way I like to do things. That’s important. I want him to fit into the fabric of our staff. We’re got great camaraderie, great unity amongst our staff and I think that bleeds into our players and I want to make sure that person fits.”"

Whoever the new coach is will have talent but not a lot of depth to work with. Joe Jackson and Demetrius Jackson return as the likely starters at defensive end. After taking a year off, Gerald Willis is the likely starter at one tackle spot. He dominated on the scout team in practice last season.

Beyond that, there should be a battle for the other starting defensive tackle spot. Rising Sophomore Jon Ford, rising Junior Pat Bethel and incoming Freshman Nesta Silvera will challenge to start alongside Willis. They will all see playing time.

At defensive end, Jonathan Garvin made an impact as a Freshman in 2017. He tied for the Miami team lead with team MVP Jaquan Johnson last season with two fumble recoveries. Freshmen Gregory Rosseau and Patrick Joyner could also see playing time in 2018.
