After losing their first two games of the week to drop to 3-6, the Miami Hurricanes won the final two games of their series against Maine to improve to 5-6 on the season and even their record for the week at 2-2.

The Miami Hurricanes began the season with a midweek trip to Boca Raton to play the first of three games this season against Florida Atlantic. The final two games of the season series will be in Coral Gables.

Florida Atlantic began the scoring on Wednesday night with a four-run bottom of the first on four hits. Miami Hurricanes middle of the week starter Michael Mediavilla settled down a bit, but the damage was done.

Mediavilla lasted 4.2 innings, gave up six hits, five runs, five earned with four walks and four strikeouts. He now has a 9.67 ERA in two starts and a 5.91 ERA overall in three appearances.

The Miami Hurricanes bullpen shutout Florida Atlantic over the next four and third innings. The Owls got only two hits and struck out five times against the Miami relievers.

Miami scored one in the second and two in the third inning to get back into the game. Miami got on the board with a bases-loaded walk by Freddy Zamora. A Michael Perez two-run home run an inning later got Miami within a run. FAU and Miami exchanged sacrifice flies in the fourth and eighth to close out the scoring.

The loss was the second straight midweek game for Miami. They lost 9-0 at home last Wednesday to Missouri.

The loss to the Owls put the Hurricanes in an early hole at 3-5. A team that missed their first NCAA Tournament after making 44 straight needed a better start to the season. Could Miami miss their second consecutive NCAA Tournament during Jim Morris’ last season?
