Mark Richt comments after day one of Miami Hurricanes Spring Practice
The Miami Hurricanes began spring practice on Tuesday at the Greentree Practice Fields. Head Coach Mark Richt spoke about what to expect this spring and how day one played out.
The Miami Hurricanes boss discussed the weather, getting the new players acclimated to their system and in better playing condition and the installation of a few new plays and coverages.
The primary buzz around the Miami Hurricanes spring practice will be who emerges as the first string quarterback. Spring practice is not likely to determine the starter against LSU. That is what is on the minds of most of the Miami Hurricanes fan base this offseason.
Other areas to watch this spring are who stands out at wide receiver, how much five-star running back Lorenzo Lingard can push starter Travis Homer, the rebuilding of the defensive line and which Freshmen impresses the most from a talented group in the secondary.
The initial practice on Tuesday was the first time that the players were back in pads and on the field together since the Orange Bowl loss to Wisconsin. Miami hopes to be able to focus on the future and put the three-game losing streak to end the season behind them.
Spring practice is essentially the start of a new season. The entire Freshman class is not on campus yet. It gives the Freshman that have been in school for two months a chance to get to show what they can do for the field for the first time and compete against the upperclassmen.
Richt spoke about how things went the first day.
"“Well, Day 1 – as you can tell, it was a little bit warm and humid, which was good…We did have a nice breeze, which helped them out a little bit. I thought we competed really well. It’s just fun to come out here and most everybody knows what to do – and that includes how we stretch, how we go from drill to drill, how we hustle after a rack of four plays, just how we buckle up our chinstrap every play."
