In what turned out to be their most important weekend of the season, the Miami Hurricanes swept number 24 Virginia in a weekend series. The sweep was critical after Miami blew a seven-run lead in a midweek loss to Florida Atlantic.
After tight wins on Friday and Saturday, the Miami Hurricanes scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday on their way to an 8-1 victory. Andrew Cabezas had his second straight outstanding start in a row in his second start of the season.
Miami opened the scoring early on Sunday with two runs in the first inning and two in the second. The Hurricanes scoring in the first inning came after two outs. Catcher Isaac Quinones doubled in outfielders Hunter Tackett and Michael Burns to open the scoring. Tackett began the rally with a single with two outs.
Miami extended their lead in the second. Tackett was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded scoring second baseman Willy Escala with Miami’s third run. Quinones then reached base on an error Virginia first baseman Nate Eikoff that allowed Miami shortstop Freddy Zamora to score to give Miami a 4-0 lead.
The Hurricanes then broke open the scoring with the four-run eighth for the 8-1 victory. Cabezas pitched six innings for the victory. Jeremy Cook and Cooper Hammond combined to close the game in three scoreless innings.
