Miami Hurricanes sweep UVA, finish 3-1 for the week

Cabezas allowed three hits, one earned run with two walks and eight strikeouts. The Hurricanes pitching staff shut down Virginia’s offense throughout the entire series. The Cavaliers scored three runs in 29 innings in the three-game series. That’s a 0.93 earned run average.

Miami won the opener 3-2 in 11 innings. The Hurricanes had to rally after Virginia scored two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game. The Hurricanes brought the winning run home in the bottom of the 11th when first baseman Raymond Gil singled home Burns to give Miami the victory.

Ace Jeb Bargfeldt continued to pitch well in the series opener. He pitched 7.2 innings allowing six hits, two earned runs with two walks and four strikeouts. Frankie Bartow got the win in relief.

Saturday night’s game was another pitcher’s duel. Evan McKendry continued his dominant season against Virginia.

McKendry went seven innings allowing three hits, three walks and 12 strikeouts in a 1-0 Miami victory. Entering Friday’s games McKendry was 22nd nationally averaging 13.66 strikeouts per nine innings. His performance Saturday night improved that.

A Romy Gonzalez triple in the second inning plating Quinones accounted for the only scoring in Saturday’s game. Gonzalez was thrown out at home trying to stretch the triple into an inside the park home run. Bartow pitched the final two innings for his second save.
