The weekend sweep put the Hurricanes in first place in the ACC Coastal Division. Miami had split their first six conference games with Notre Dame and Duke. The sweep this weekend was encouraging after Miami blew a seven-run lead in an 11-9 loss to FAU on Wednesday night in Coral Gables.

After the Owls took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second Miami scored nine unanswered runs. Seven of those came in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 8-2. Miami added one more in the fifth to extend the lead to seven runs/

FAU chipped away at the lead with one run in the sixth and two in the seventh. With a 9-5 lead heading to the ninth inning, Miami seemed safe. The Owls scored six runs in the top of the ninth to eventually earn an 11-9 victory.

All six runs were unearned and charged to Hammond and Bartow. The winning runs came on a grand slam by FAU’s Eric Rivera with two outs. Hammond gave up the game-winning on a 2-2 count. Gil was the hitting star for the Hurricanes with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.

Next game: The Miami Hurricanes will travel to Fort Myers to play 18-5 Florida Gulf Coast. The Eagles were listed under others receiving votes in last week’s College Baseball Writers Association Poll.
