Miami Hurricanes crushed by Marlins in exhibition game
Michael Mediavilla relieved McMahon and continued to struggle. He lasted 3.1 innings giving up nine runs, five earned on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Daniel Epstein relieved Epstein and gave up six runs in 0.1 innings. The game was only seven innings. The Hurricanes shut out the Marlins over the final two innings.
Marlins CEO Derek Jeter who has been cursed by fans for the trades he made in the offseason visited the Hurricanes locker room. The players were excited to have a chance to hear the future Hall of Famer speak. Infielder Willy Escala spoke about the opportunity to meet the former Yankees shortstop.
"“He was probably my favorite player ever…I had like three posters of him in my room. Just to hear him talk to us and meet him was a really cool experience. I might have never gotten that opportunity if I wasn’t here.”"
Escala also liked the experience of getting to play in a major league ballpark.
"“It was honestly one of the greatest experiences I’ve had…Just to be on the field with them and talk to some of them was a blessing and to be able to share that with my team made it one of my favorite experiences… We were just trying to do our thing…We were focused on hitting the ball and staying within the game and not trying to make it too big. Things kind of rolled our way there. I was kind of iffy if the ball was going to be fair or foul, but it landed fair and I ran hard.”"
