Miami Hurricanes recruit named Florida Mr. Basketball
Vernon Carey Jr. the son of former Miami Hurricanes football star Vernon Carey has been named Florida’s Mr. Basketball. Carey averaged 26.1 points per game and 10.4 rebounds per game for Nova Southeastern University School (NS University School).
Carey is the number two basketball recruit in the Class of 2019 according to 247Sports.Com. He led NS University to its first state championship this season. Mr. Basketball is awarded by the Florida Dairy Farmer’s Association. The Miami Hurricanes will have to compete with numerous blue bloods to get to sign.
Carey’s father played eight years in the NFL, all with the Dolphins. Carey Senior played his college football for the Miami Hurricanes.
Jim Larranaga hopes fact works in the Miami Hurricanes when it comes time for Carey to make a decision where he will attend college. Cary Senior was a backup at right tackle on the 2001 National Championship team.
Carey is the first player from South Florida to win the award since former Kentucky star and current Phoenix Suns guard Brandon Knight won the award in 2010 and 2011.
Knight is sitting out this season with a torn ACL. He has averaged 15.2 points per game for his career. They are the only players from Broward County to win the award in its 35-year history.
