Miami Hurricanes extension with Jim Larranaga important for future
The Miami Hurricanes announcement that they have agreed to a two-year extension with Head Basketball Coach Jim Larranaga is important to the future of Miami Basketball. Larranaga’s contract now runs through 2024.
The announcement gives the Miami Hurricanes stability. Teams will not be able to state that Larranaga’s retirement could be imminent. He will be the Head Coach of the Miami Hurricanes for at least the next six seasons.
Miami has not signed any players, nor do they have any verbal commitments for the Class of 2018. Larranaga and Miami basketball were both implicated in the FBI scandal that has rocked College Basketball. They were later cleared but the suggestion of impropriety has still hindered the Hurricanes recruiting.
The extension that Athletic Director Blake James and Larranaga agreed to signals that the University is behind Larranaga and his staff for the next six years at least. If it doesn’t help for this recruiting cycle it should at least help Miami for the class of 2019.
James gave credit to Larranaga, his staff and his wife Liz for the success that the basketball program has had over the last seven years.
"“Coach Larrañaga is an integral part of our athletics department’s success, and he continues to demonstrate year after year that he is one of the best basketball coaches in the nation…We are fortunate that he and Liz have made Miami their home and that they will remain a part of the Hurricane Family for years to come.”"
