Miami Hurricanes extension with Jim Larranaga important for future
"I am grateful for this commitment and especially want to thank our president, Julio Frenk, our athletics director, Blake James, and our University Administration for the confidence they have shown in me and our coaching staff. Liz and I, and my staff, love Miami and look forward to many years ahead.”"
In addition to the implication in the Addidas-FBI bribery scandal, its been a trying year for Larranaga and the basketball program. What began as a promising season with their highest ever preseason ranking turned into one of turbulence.
Miami began the season ranked 13th in the country despite Freshman star Lonnie Walker coming off knee surgery last summer. He didn’t seem to be at full strength until late January.
Just when Walker seemed to be getting healthy and improving Miami lost their rebound and assist leader and second-leading scorer guard Bruce Brown to season-ending foot surgery.
Miami began the season 10-1 then dealt with inconsistency throughout ACC play. They finally ended the season on a four-game winning streak.
After the season ended, as expected Brown and Walker announced they are leaving Miami for the NBA Draft. The Hurricanes also might lose Center-Forward Dewan Huell to the NBA Draft. Huell has entered his name but not signed with an agent. He has until June 11 to make a decision.
Next: Jim Larranaga will continue to coach Miami Hurricanes for foreseeable future
Even if Huell does come back Miami will only have nine scholarship players for next season. That puts the Hurricanes four under the limit. It will be difficult for Larranaga and his staff to conduct scrimmages in 2018-19 without a full complement of players.
