Miami Hurricanes WRs Langham and Cager need to play bigger
The Miami Hurricanes lost nearly 42 percent of their receptions from 2017. Wide receiver Braxton Berrios and tight end Christopher Herndon IV were big losses for UM. Who can step up and replace that production?
Berrios and Herndon were in the same position a year ago. Berrios stepped up as the Miami Hurricanes top receiver last season. He had to replace the production of Stacy Coley who graduated after the 2016 season and Rising Junior Ahmmon Richards who missed five games with injuries last season.
Herndon became the practically the only target at tight end last season when Miami lost 2017 first round NFL Draft pick at tight end David Njoku at tight end. Herndon accounted for almost 82 percent of the receptions at tight end in 2017.
WIth the Hurricanes extremely inexperienced at tight end entering 2018 they will need more production from Lawrence Cager and Darrell Langham at wide receiver. That tandem are the biggest returning receivers Miami has on the roster.
The Hurricanes have used both in the red zone to come up with big plays. Langham made two of the biggest receptions of the season in 2017. His touchdowns reception against Florida State last year is one of the most memorable in Miami history.
The Hurricanes need more consistency from both players. Cager and Langham give Miami some much-needed size on the edge.
Cager and Langham are getting a lot of reps this Spring with Richards still recovering from a knee injury that caused him to miss the final two games of last season. Receivers coach Ron Dugans spoke to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald about the progress that Cager and Langham are making this Spring.
