31 Greg Olsen TE Chicago Bears 2007

Olsen was the latest of what had been a fairly long line of great tight ends with the Miami Hurricanes. He succeeded Kellen Winslow Jr, who replaced Jeremy Shockey who was the successor to Bubba Franks. After Olsen came Jimmy Graham.

Olsen played three years with the Hurricanes with most of the damage coming in his final two seasons. He finished his Miami Hurricanes career with 87 receptions for 1,215 yards and six touchdowns. All but 16 catches for 275 yards and a touchdown came in his final two seasons.

  • After being drafted by the Bears Olsen became the first player selected in the first two rounds of the 2007 draft to sign a contract. Olsen’s rookie contract was five years.

Olsen joined a Bears team that was the defending NFC Champions and had the second-best record in the conference the previous season. By his second season, Olsen was a primary target in the passing game. In his third season in Chicago, he led the Bears in targets, receptions and receiving touchdowns.

After the Bears hired Mike Martz as their Offensive Coordinator for the 2010 season, Olsen’s days in Chicago were numbered. Martz didn’t use a tight end in his offense. Olsen was traded to the Carolina Panthers for a third-round pick in July of 2011.

Olsen has become a mainstay of the Carolina passing game during his seven seasons in Charlotte. He became the first tight end in NFL History to go over 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. He accomplished the feat from 2013-16. If not for injuries last season he might have made it four.
