Vernon Carey Jr. can create a legacy with Miami Hurricanes

The Miami Hurricanes pursuit of Vernon Carey Junior for the Class of 2019 can be a program transcending player. Carey is the son of former Miami Hurricanes and Dolphins offensive lineman Vernon Carey Sr.

The best player in Miami Hurricanes history, Rick Barry graduated over 50 years ago. Barry remains the only first-team All-American in Miami History. Since Barry, Tim James in 1999 and Shane Larkin in 2013 have been named as third and second-team All-Americans.

Vernon Carey from University High School in Fort Lauderdale is one of the highest ranked basketball recruits in the history of the State of Florida. According to the 247Sports composite rankings for the Class of 2019, Carey is the top-ranked player in Florida and at power forward, and the second highest ranked player overall in the class.

If the Miami Hurricanes can sign him, Carey would be the highest ranked basketball recruit in Miami History. Working on the Hurricanes side is that the 6’9 245 pound forward is the son of former Miami offensive lineman Vernon Carey Sr.

Carey Junior narrowed his choices to the Hurricanes, Kansas, North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky  Michigan State and UCLA.

Lonnie Walker who is leaving Miami for the NBA after one season in Coral Gables was previously the program’s top-ranked player. Walker was 16th in the composite rankings for the Class of 2017 according to 247Sports Composite rankings.
