The Miami Hurricanes defeated Florida State 11-5 in Tallahassee on Sunday postponing Florida State Head Coach Mike Martin’s chance to set college baseball’s all-time wins record.

Martin tied Augie Garrido’s record of 1,975 wins with victories over the Miami Hurricanes in the first two games of the series. The Canes came back from a 3-1 deficit in Sunday’s game to avoid a sweep and postpone Martin’s celebration.

After scoring one run combined in the first two games of the series and two through the first 22 innings, Miami surpassed that with a three-run fifth to take control of the game. The Hurricanes added four runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to break the game open.

After scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning the Seminoles didn’t score again until they plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Andrew Cabezas grinded out seven innings. He allowed three runs on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts for his fifth victory of the season against four losses.

Miami scored runs off of five of Florida State’s six pitchers in the game. Only Cobi Johnson who finished the game for the Seminoles kept Miami scoreless.

The Hurricanes inconsistent offense showed up for the first time all weekend. Five different Hurricanes finished the afternoon with two hits.

The offense was sparked by Freshman catcher Isaac Quinones. Quinones went two-for-five with a run scored, five RBIs and two walks. His second-inning home run, the first of his career, gave Miami a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish.

Quinones classmate, right fielder Dylan Cloonan reached base five times via two hits and three walks. Miami benefitted from nine walks issued by Florida State’s pitching staff.

The 11 run barrage continued a Miami season-long pattern of an explosive offensive after struggling for several consecutive games. The offensive inconsistency has plagued them for the last two seasons.

The Hurricanes wasted a brilliant pitching performance on Friday night from Jeb Bargfeldt in a 2-0 loss. Bargfeldt pitched a complete game allowing two runs on three hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.

Florida State’s Drew Parrish was better in the victory. He shutout the Hurricanes over eight innings. Parrish allowed four hits, three walks and struck out 13.

A two-run home run by Florida State catcher Cal Raleigh in the bottom of the first inning was the game’s only offense. Freddy Zamora and Michael Burns each had two hits for Miami.

Florida State broke out the bats late in Saturday night’s victory. What had been a 4-0 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh turned into a 10-1 victory.

Burns and Quinones each had two hits for Miami. First baseman Raymond Gil’s first home run provided the Hurricanes lone run in the eighth. FSU had built up a 7-0 lead by then. They tacked on three more in the eighth for the final margin.

Evan McKendry pitched six innings for Miami in the second game of the series. He allowed four runs, two earned on six hits, three walks with nine strikeouts. The bullpen imploded to put the game out of reach.

C.J. Van Eyk had Florida State’s second straight dominant performance on the mound against Miami. He pitched 7.1 innings, allowed seven hits, one run, with one walk and ten strikeouts.

The Hurricanes struck out 30 times in the three-game series. Third basemen Drew Mendoza had two hits and three RBIs for Florida State in Saturday’s victory.
