Miami Hurricanes host FGCU in final game of season series
The Miami Hurricanes baseball team will host Florida Gulf Coast in the final game of their three-game season series. The teams each won a home game in the first two games of the 2018 season series.
The Miami Hurricanes are coming off of a three-game sweep of Bethune-Cookman. They enter the weekend with a season-long four game winning streak. Miami lost the first game of the season-series against the Eagles 1-0 in Fort Myers in March. They won 8-1 in Coral Gables last month.
Miami hopes to keep the momentum alive with Junior right-hander Andrew Cabezas taking the mound. It is the first mid-week start of his career. Cabezas lasted just 1.1 innings against Bethune-Cookman on Sunday. He was pulled from the game after a long rain delay.
Cabezas did not have a good outing against the Wildcats. He surrendered five hits and four runs, three earned. Miami’s pitching has been solid all season. They were shelled in the last two games by Bethune-Cookman. The Hurricanes bats came alive to bail out the pitching. Miami allowed 18 runs in the final two games of the series.
The Hurricanes pitching has been outstanding against Florida Gulf Coast this season. They have allowed just two runs over 17 innings. That has come against a very good hitting Eagles team.
Florida Gulf Coast ranks 42nd in the country with a .290 team batting average. Their 39 home runs are 72nd nationally. The two players to keep an eye on are Richie Garcia and Kohl Gilmore.
Garcia leads Florida Gulf Coast with 47 RBIs and is second with a .344 team batting average. Gilmore leads the Eagles with ten home runs and is second with 39 RBIs.
Right-hander Evan Lumbert gets the start for FGCU. He is 6-2 with a 2.79 era. The Eagles are 10-3 in Lumbert’s starts this season. That includes wins in three straight games he has started.
In his last outing, Lumbert pitched six innings, allowed five hits, one unearned run with three walks and seven strikeouts. He started and got the win in Florida Gulf Coast’s victory over Miami. Lumbert dominated the Hurricanes. He pitched eight innings, allowed two hits, walked one and struck out 12.
