In a ranking of the Power Five Conference schools’ coaches posted Wednesday on CBS Sports.Com, Mark Richt was ranked 17th.

Wednesday’s post was CBSSports.Com’s second ranking of College Football Head Coaches in less than a week. They published a list on May 3 that ranked coaches using different criteria and tiers. Mark Richt was ranked 17th among the Power five coaches. Last week Richt was considered on the third tier of Head Coaches.

Each tier was honored after a former coach. The first tier was named for former Alabama Head Coach Paul “Bear Bryant”. The criteria to make the first list is to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

That list included Nick Saban, Urban Meyer and Dabo Swinney. It’s hard to see Swinney as a first ballot Hall of Famer with just one National Championship. Get another he’s in the discussion.

The second list is Jimbo Fisher, Chip Kelly, James Franklin, Lincoln Riley and Kirby Smart. Everyone on that list but Franklin has an appearance in the College Football Playoff.

Fisher has a National Championship. Kelly finished National Runner-up after the 2010 season, plus two Rose Bowl appearances and a Fiesta Bowl appearance in four seasons as Oregon’s Head Coach. He returns to College this fall at UCLA.

Riley had an incredible debut season in Norman last year. The Sooners bring in the ninth-ranked recruiting class this fall. Their 2019 class is ranked second nationally behind Alabama. Riley is going to have to prove that he belongs in that tier. For now, he has a good argument.
