Miami Hurricanes get sweep at VaTech, winning streak at eight

Freddy Zamora had three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs from the leadoff spot. Tony Jenkins got on base five times, scored four runs and had four RBIs. Michael Amditis had three hits and three RBIs.

Evan McKendry had another nearly dominant performance. He pitched eight innings, allowed nine hits, four runs, three earned with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Miami extended the winning streak to five games with a 7-1 midweek victory over Florida Gulf Coast. The win gave the Hurricanes the season series against the Eagles two games to one. Andrew Cabezas got the first-midweek start of his career and nearly pitched a no-hitter.

Cabezas went seven innings, allowed one unearned run on one hit with five walks and seven strikeouts. Centerfielder’s Gage Morey’s third-inning single was the only hit off of Cabezas. Cabezas got the win to improve to 6-4 on the season.

Reyes, Dylan Cloonan and Gil all had multiple hit games. Reyes scored a run and drove in another. Cloonan drove in two and scored one. Gil had three hits and two RBIs.

Next game: Miami returns home for the final homestand of Jim Morris’ career. The Hurricanes host Stetson in a midweek game on Tuesday night. Their final home series is against Boston College Thursday and Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
