Freshman tight end Brevin Jordan joins the Miami football team with a lot of hype. He is the top-ranked tight end in the Class of 2018 and 33rd ranked player overall nationally.

Jordan joins the Miami Football program in a position of great need. The Hurricanes lost graduated Senior Chris Herndon after last season. Herndon finished second on Miami in 2018 in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns.

Rising Junior Michael Irvin II and Rising Sophomore Brian Polendey didn’t do much behind Herndon last season. Irvin had nine receptions for 78 yards in six games last season. Polendey also played in six games in 2018. He played mostly on special teams and did not record a reception.

According to the Miami Herald’s Susan Miller Degnan, Jordan is expected to enroll at Miami on Monday. He and classmate Will Mallory should give the Hurricanes a significant upgrade at tight end.

Mallory who is from Jacksonville is the 211th ranked player in the Class of 2011, the eighth-ranked tight end and 37th ranked player in Florida.

Jordan is ready to get to work. He told Miller Degnan that he thinks about the Hurricanes season opener against LSU every day.

"“I think about the LSU game every night before I go to sleep,…I think about how loud the stadium will be, and [fellow top tight-end signee] Will Mallory and me running out of the tunnel — ‘Tight End U,’ true freshmen, all the expectations and stuff.“I’m ready to go. I’m ready to get out of here. I’m ready for college. I’m ready for a new life.’’"

Jordan and Mallory seem to be embracing the legacy of the tight ends that came before them at Miami. Players like Bubba Franks, Jeremy Shockey, Greg Olsen and Kellen Winslow II and more recently Herndon and David Njoku have thrived at tight end for Miami.

Jordan has become the leader of the 2018 Miami football signees. The Herald reported that most if not all of the remainder of the class that is not yet enrolled are expected to join Jordan on Monday. The Herald spoke to South Florida recruiting Guru Larry Blustein about Jordan’s leadership skills and his ability on the field.

"“He was the ringleader of that class,…They were all buds…A freak…He’s going to be one of those guys that takes it right over. He’s a dominator. This kid is really, really, really good.’’"

Miami tight ends coach Todd Hartley spoke about the close bond that Mallory and Jordan are forming and the freakish skills that Jordan will bring to the Hurricanes offense.

"“I told them both they’re going to be brothers for life,…They bought in. They saw the vision and committed and stayed loyal.’’“(Jordan is) a high-end player  (with) unbelievable ball skills — just the ability to track a football and make the catch, body control in the air. Once he makes the catch, he’s such an athlete and makes plays in space that most big men can’t make. And then he has the size and girth to break an arm tackle or run through a DB trying to tackle him. Then, he has the ability to get on the line of scrimmage and block anything that anybody throws at him.You don’t want to say he’s ready-made, but he’s as close to ready-made as you’ll find throughout the high-school ranks. He’s a good kid, too.’’"

  • Jordan believes strongly in Miami football Head Coach Mark Richt. Jordan was told he would be playing early for the Hurricanes.

"“Coach Richt kept it straight,…He said, ‘We need tight ends. I don’t guarantee players playing time, but based off your film there’s no doubt you’re going to play early.’ He was always up front and honest. When he talks, it’s facts.“Other schools were talking about tight end this and tight end that. But Miami just showed us film. The evidence was there.’’"

Jordan is ready for the big time. He is not shy about becoming an important player early.

"“I want people to understand that just because I’m a freshman, doesn’t mean I won’t get into a defensive end from LSU — a 300-pound defensive end,” he said. “It’s crazy. It’s insane. I’m ready.’’"

He could be an impact player as early as the opener against the Tigers. Although Jordan missed Spring Practice he is the favorite to earn the starting tight end spot. Miami plays their Freshman under Richt, but not many started last season. Navaughn Donaldson started at left guard and earned ESPN True Freshman All-America status.

In Richt’s first season four Freshman started. That included the All-Freshman linebacking core of Shaq Quarterman, Michael Pinckney and Zach McCloud. Wide receiver Ahmmon Richards also started as a Freshman in 2016. Quarterman, Pinckney and McCloud also earned spots on the true Freshman All-America team.
