Miami baseball to face Clemson and Notre Dame in ACC Tournament
The Hurricanes lost the third game of the series against the Fighting Irish 9-5. Greg Veliz started and lasted only four innings. He was sidelined for the next two months after that with an arm injury. Veliz returned three weeks ago against Virginia Tech.
Miami Head Coach Jim Morris told Inside the U that Veliz hit 98 on the radar gun against the Hokies. He hasn’t pitched since. They could use him as a valuable asset out of the bullpen if he’s healthy.
Miami impressively won the first two games of the series on the road against Clemson last month. They had their biggest comeback in 26 years in the opening game of the series.
The Hurricanes trailed 11-3 after eight innings. They tied the game with an eight-run ninth. Freddy Zamora’s one-out single in the 12th put the Canes provided the winning margin in an improbable 12-11 win.
Zamora had four hits in the opener against the Tigers. It was part of a big Freshman season for the shortstop. He was named the 2018 team MVP on Saturday.
Miami came back to win game two behind a dominant performance from McKendry. The Sophomore right-hander pitched a complete game. He allowed one run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Hurricanes knocked out Clemson starter Brooks Crawford after three innings. Miami scored four runs on three hits and two walks. The Hurricanes added two more runs off of the Tigers bullpen in a 6-1 victory.
