The Miami football team’s season opener against LSU will kickoff in 100 days. The Hurricanes and Tigers will play in the Advocare Classic on September 2 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

In the next 100 days Canes Warning will be previewing one or two players on most days. The player previews will start with number 99 Joe Jackson on May 26 with 99 days remaining until the season begins.

Some days will have two players and others will not have any at all. Not every number is taken by a Miami football player. Other numbers are doubled up. No player wears the number 98 for example. Both Jaquan Johnson and Jeff Thomas wear the number four.

There are several numbers that are not worn by Miami football players. Ten players share numbers. On those days depending on who the players that share numbers are there will be one or two previews. Johnson and Thomas will receive their own previews.

The most notable players to share the same number last season were quarterback Malik Rosier and cornerback Malek Young. They would have shared the same number this season, but Young suffered a career-ending spinal cord injury in the Orange Bowl loss to Wisconsin last season.

  • The Miami football team has been getting a lot of notice during and after the completion of Spring Football. The Hurricanes are the favorite to repeat in the ACC Coastal Division this fall. Miami returns seven starters on defense and five on offense.

Two of the Hurricanes five returning starters on offense are changing positions. Tyree St. Louis is moving from right tackle to left tackle. Navaughn Donaldson moves from right guard to right tackle. Miami also returns starters, Malik Rosier, running back Travis Homer and center Tyler Gauthier.

Tight end Michael Irvin II started the last two games of the2017 season. Miami also returns wide receiver, Ahmmon Richards. Richards started seven games last season but missed six games with various injuries.

Some of the other high numbered players to watch over the next few days are defensive end Jonathan Garvin who is number 97 and defensive tackle Jon Ford who is 96. There is no number 98 on Miami.

Miami Football Coach Mark Richt continues to develop the talent. The Hurricanes are plugging up holes that have been an issue in Richt’s first two seasons. The recruiting classes at Miami have improved from 22nd to 12th to eighth during Richt’s first three seasons. They also improved from 9-4 in 2016 to 10-3 last season.

The 2017 season the Miami football program had some big accomplishments. They extended a five-game winning streak entering the season to 15, won their first ACC Coastal Division title and appeared in their first ACC Championship game.

The three-game losing streak to end the 2017 season left the Hurricanes with some unfinished accomplishments. The 38-3 loss to Clemson in the ACC Championship game and a 34-24 loss to Wisconsin in the Orange Bowl left the players and coaching staff wanting more.

Richt brings back his entire coaching staff minus defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski for the third consecutive year. That continuity can only help the players. The 2018 season should be one that the Miami football program continues to grow.
