Taggart was able to sign a fairly good recruiting class for Florida State. The Seminoles finished 11th in the country according to 247Sports. Oregon, where he spent one season and was replaced by former Miami football player Mario Cristobal, had the nation’s 16th best class.

How well and quickly can Taggart and Florida State can recover from a 7-6 season? The Seminoles had a difficult time at the end of the Bobby Bowden era. In Bowden’s final five seasons, Florida State had at least four losses in each season.

  • It took Fisher three years before getting FSU back to the nation’s elite. The Seminoles were 12-2 and won the Orange Bowl in his third season.

Florida State went 14-0 and won the National Championship in his fourth season. They would not get back to that level but did play in a New Year’s six Bowl game before last year.

Florida State showed signs of collapse even during the 2016 season that ended in a 33-32 Orange Bowl victory over Michigan. Despite winning ten games, FSU’s defense was inconsistent in 2016.

In their three losses in 2016, Florida State gave up 137 points. The problem in 2017 was the offense. FSU ranked 71st in the country in scoring.

Taggart’s teams have been proficient scoring. They have generally had trouble stopping the other team. He has never had both units performing at an elite level.
