Miami football coach Mark Richt best Power Five in Florida
Similar to Florida State’s hiring of Taggart, Florida’s hiring of Dan Mullen brings a Coach without the resume that Richt had when he was hired at Miami. The new Gators boss had a 69-46 record in nine years at Mississippi State. The .600 winning percentage is impressive, but Mullen was 33-39 in the SEC.
The Bulldogs best season under Mullen was in 2014. Miss State went 10-3, Mullen earned SEC Coach of the Year and the Bulldogs played in the Orange Bowl. He led MSU to Bowl games in his last seven seasons.
Mullen will have to prove himself on a much higher level now. Although he stays in the SEC and moves to the less difficult Eastern Division, the expectations will be much higher in Gainesville.
McElwain was never really accepted at Florida despite winning the SEC East in his first two seasons. His allegations of death threats against him sealed his fate with the Gators. McElwain refused to elaborate and the allegations were never substantiated.
Mullen also faces a challenge upgraded the talent in Gainesville. Florida has three players on the NFL.Com list of top 150 players in 2018. None of those players are at a skill position on offense. West Virginia Quarterback Will Grier who is 18th on the list transferred from Florida.
