"“McGee: I don’t know if anyone can save Orgeron’s job. The Tigers open the season against Miami in Arlington, Texas.”"

The first mention of the Miami football team in CBSSports’ “Now 100 days away, here’s 100 things to fire you up for college football in 2018”  is that the Hurricanes are in the second tier of teams for a National Championship.

The first list is labeled the contender and the next group of teams in the second tier. Miami is in the second tier. Those lists are:

"“The contenders Here’s the aforementioned pretty clear-cut title picture. Alabama has the team to win it all, and Clemson just needs the quarterback position settled. Then there’s a drop to the tier of really talented teams could maybe beat Alabama and/or Clemson with improved play during the season and some good fortune on the injury front (title odds in parenthesis via SportsLine). 22. Alabama (7/4) 23. Clemson (5/1) 24. Ohio State (7/1) 25. Georgia (7/1) 26. Michigan (12/1) 27. Penn State (12/1) The second tier While the SEC broke the idea early that two from the same league can’t make the playoff, chances are only two teams can emerge from that SEC-Big Ten cluster of seven contenders and sleepers. That’s where I think teams like Miami, Oklahoma and Washington look particularly interesting, with favorable schedules and a good shot to join the SEC and Big Ten winners in the playoff. 28. Wisconsin (30/1) 29. Auburn (25/1) 30. Miami (40/1) 31. Oklahoma (20/1) 32. Washington (20/1)”"

  • The next time Miami shows up on CBS’ list is among the 22 best playmakers in college football (not sure why those chose 22 instead of a more round number like 20 or 25).  Their definition was:

"The playmakers The Heisman Trophy awards the most outstanding player in college football, but the Heisman Trophy race focuses on the players who can realistically win the award and that’s going to be mostly quarterbacks and running backs. The best players in college football do not reside exclusively in the offensive backfield, so this is a space to highlights the next 22 (11 offense, 11 defense) players I’m really excited to watch on the field in 2018."

The list of players was done alphabetically. In the list of 100, the Miami football team was 30th which landed them third in the second tier teams. The teams were listed in order of their odds to win the National Championship. Miami is 40-1. Wide receiver Shaq Quarterman 66th and Ahmmon Richards is  67th on the 100th list.

After the players, the last 26 items on CBS’ list are the best games of the season. They again did not use a round number which is strange. Twenty-six is a consistent number for CBS Sports though. Their college basketball rankings are generally the Top 25 plus one.
