The ACC, Big Ten and ESPN recently released the schedule for the 2018 ACC-Big Challenge. How would a similar challenge look for football? Should the ACC have it with the Big Ten or Sec? Against the right opponent, it would help the Miami football program.

The question comes down to would Power Five schools be willing to play a second non-conference game against Power Five opponent in coming up seasons. Would the Miami football program be willing to add a second non-conference game against a Power Five opponent in the future?

The Miami football team plays LSU in Arlington, Texas in 2018, Florida in Orlando in 2019, At Michigan State in 2020 and Alabama in Atlanta in 2021. They also have games scheduled against Texas A&M and Notre Dame in future seasons. The games with the Spartans, Aggies and Fighting Irish are home and homes.

A similar challenge in football between the ACC and the Big Ten or SEC would create a lot of buzz. Most fans would probably more interested in a challenge between Power Five Conferences in football than in basketball.

The basketball one is currently played on home sites. That’s a bit of a surprise with all of the neutral court games played early in the season. The Miami football schedule over the next over the next eight seasons includes a team from a Power Five conference or Notre Dame.

Most Power Five conference teams are unlikely to schedule more than one game per season against other Power Five teams. That could limit the likelihood of the challenge. The other hinderance would be how far out the schedules are set in advance.
