Scott Patchan was the other backup to Herndon at tight end last season. Patchan was moved from defensive end because Miami lacked depth at the position. He is back at his more natural position this fall. Although he did not record a reception, Patchan did see time in the games against Syracuse and Clemson.

Patchan was a four-star defensive lineman coming out of high school. Rivals ranked him as the 19th best defensive end in the country. Patchen recorded one solo tackle last season. He could figure into the rotation at defensive end this fall.
