Three Miami basketball alums will begin to play with their NBA Teams in the Summer League Tournament in Las Vegas on Thursday. Davon Reed and the Suns play at 5:30 PM ET on ESPN2. Lonnie Walker, Trey McKinney-Jones and the Spurs play at 8:00 PM ET on NBATV.

Reed has played exceptionally well for Phoenix this summer. The 2016-17 Miami Basketball leading scorer is second on the Suns in scoring and third in rebounding, assists and steals this summer. Reed is averaging 13.3 Points Per Game, four rebounds, 2.3 Assists, and 1.3 steals in Phoenix’s three games in Las Vegas.

Reed is also fourth on the Suns in minutes per game at 24.3 this summer. After struggling shooting the ball with the Suns in 2017-18, Reed has shot the ball well this summer. He is shooting 56 percent from the floor in their three games in the Summer League.

Reed and the Suns play the Philadelphia 76ers in their first game of the Summer League Tournament. Phoenix won all three of their summer league games and is the second seed in the tournament. Philadelphia lost all three and is the 30th seed.

  • Miami basketball alums Walker, McKinney-Jones and the Spurs enter the Summer League Tournament as the 19th seed. They face the 14th seeded Milwaukee Bucks in the first-round. Both the Bucks and the Spurs have lost two of their three games in Las Vegas.

Walker has seemingly gotten better with each game this summer. He is second on the Spurs in scoring, third in rebounding and leads them in assists. The 18th pick in June’s NBA Draft is averaging 13.7 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 1.0 APG and 1.7 SPG in Las Vegas.

Walker’s numbers have improved since the Spurs played in Salt Lake City last week. In Las Vegas, Walker is shooting 36 percent from the floor. In Utah, Walker averaged 10.5 PPG, three RPG, two APG and one SPG. He shot just 29 percent from the floor in Salt Lake City.

McKinney-Jones hasn’t received as many minutes as Walker has. He is averaging 8.3 PPG, 3.3 RPG and is second to Walker with 1.3 SPG. McKinney-Jones is shooting 39 percent from the floor in the three games in Las Vegas.

McKinney-Jones played most of last season with the Indiana Pacers G-League affiliate the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. He will hope to get an invite from the Spurs for this fall.

The departures from the Spurs of forward Kyle Anderson and iconic point guard Tony Parker open up the opportunities for Walker and McKinney-Jones. Hopefully their performances this Summer have made an impact with San Antonio Head Coach Greg Popovich and General Manager R.C. Buford.
