Miami basketball alums lose in NBA Summer Tourney 1st round

Miami basketball alums Lonnie Walker and Trey McKinney-Jones of the San Antonio Spurs Summer League team and Davon Reed of the Phoenix Suns lost their first-round games in the NBA Summer League Tournament. Both teams Play consolation games on Friday.

The Spurs fell 83-75 to the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday. Both Miami basketball alums, Walker and McKinney-Jones both started for the Spurs. Walker started at off-guard and McKinney-Jones at small forward.

Both players struggled shooting the ball on Thursday. Walker scored just five points on 2-9 from the floor and 0-3 on three-point attempts. Walker did make his only attempt from the free throw line.

McKinney-Jones had a nearly identical line shooting the ball. He was 3-9 from the floor and also missed all three of his three-point attempts to finish with six points.

  • Walker made up for his poor night shooting the ball by playing a good all-around game from the floor. He had nine rebounds and three assists. McKinney-Jones added two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

    Davon Reed and the Phoenix Suns suffered one of the biggest upsets in the NBA Summer League. The third-seeded Suns lost to 30th seeded Philadelphia. Reed and the Suns lost 88-86. Phoenix lost after having a 14 point lead.

    Reed had another exceptional game for Phoenix, except for shooting the ball from three-point range. He finished with 16 points, on four-of-10 from the floor, one-of-five on three-point attempts and seven-of-nine from the free throw line. There was no news on if Jeri Ryan helped Reed on his free throws.

    Reed also contributing beyond being the Suns’ second-leading scorer against the 76ers. Had he had five rebounds and four assists.

    The Spurs and Suns face each other next. They play Friday evening at 6:30 PM ET on NBATV. That is the last game of the Summer League for both teams. The Consolation is just one game for the teams that lose in the first round of the tournament.

    Two other Miami Basketball alums will be in action on Friday. Kamari Murphy and the Brooklyn Nets play at 4 PM ET on ESPNU. Rion Brown and the Golden State Warriors will nearly play the midnight special. They tip off against the Sacramento Kings at 10 PM ET also on ESPNU.

    Murphy has probably needed to show more this summer to have a realistic chance at making the Brooklyn roster this fall. He has averaged 6.0 points per game, 5.3 rebounds per game and is shooting just 40 percent from the floor. Murphy averaged 10.4 PPG and 7.3 RPG in 50 games with the Nets G-League team on Long Island last season.

    Rion Brown is only playing 16.3 minutes in the three games he has played for Golden State in Las Vegas. He is averaging 5.3 PPG, 2.7 RPG and shooting just 32 percent from the floor.
