If Florida State’s Harlon Barnett wants to see how to attack a Notre Dame offense there are some examples above.

Diaz left Starkville after one season to become the Defensive Coordinator at Texas under National Championship Head Coach Mack Brown. The Longhorns continued the trend of Diaz’s defenses continuing to force turnovers in his first and third seasons in Austin. Overall many will say that Diaz wasn’t successful at UT.

  • His defenses did have good seasons taking the ball away in 2011 and 2013. In 2011, Texas finished 37th in the nation forcing turnovers, 59th in interceptions and 25th in fumble recoveries. As they did with Diaz’s defenses at Middle Tennessee State, Texas wasn’t able to force as many turnovers in his second season in 2012.

Texas was in the bottom third in FBS in forcing turnovers in 2012. The Longhorns finished 78th in forcing turnovers, 34th in interceptions and 106th out of 120 FBS teams in his second season under Brown. Texas returned to being a ball-hawking defense in 2013. They finished 34th in turnovers, 78th in interceptions and 12th in fumble recoveries.

A lot of the success in the 2013 season was under Greg Robinson. Former Syracuse Head Coach Greg Robinson took over for Diaz after Texas gave up 550 yards in a 40-21 loss to BYU in September that season. It could have been as much Mack Brown grasping at straws and Diaz being made into the scapegoat.

Brown only last one more season in Austin before now South Florida Head Coach Charlie Strong took over. Brown was basically forced into retirement following the 2014 season.
