Jim Morris just concluded his 25th and final season as the Miami Hurricanes baseball coach. Six of the 13 Miami baseball alums that have appeared in an MLB All-Star game played for Morris in Coral Gables.

Three current and three retired Miami baseball alums who played under Jim Morris have appeared in the Major League Baseball All-Star game. Nearly three dozen players who played at Miami under Morris reached the Major Leagues.

Current Miami baseball alums who played under Morris to be named to an MLB All-Star team are Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun, Cleveland Indians first baseman Yonder Alonso and Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal.

Alonso is the most recent Miami baseball alum to appear in the Midsummer Classic. He singled twice in two at-bats at Marlins Park in 2017.

Retired players who matriculated under Morris and became All-stars were pitchers Chris Perez and Danny Graves and first baseman Gaby Sanchez. Perez made the team in 2011 and 2012. Graves pitched in the 2000 game and made the team in 2004 but did not get in the game.

Sanchez is one of only two players in history that played college baseball at Miami and represented the Marlins in an All-Star game. He popped out in his only All-Star at-bat in 2011. Charles Johnson is the only other Miami baseball alum to represent the Marlins in an All-Star game.

Morris spent 12 years as Georgia Tech’s Head Baseball Coach before he was hired by Miami. Several of his players on the Yellow Jackets became All-Stars. The most notable were Pitcher Kevin Brown, catcher Jason Varitek and shortstop Nomar Garciaparra.
