Somehow, Miami linebackers were left off the top 50. Players like Dan Morgan, D.J. Williams, Jonathan Vilma and Quarterman didn’t make it. The first three would go on to become first-round draft picks in the NFL.

Many Miami Football fans consider Sean Taylor the greatest player in Miami football history and often the greatest Hurricanes safety ever. It’s debatable, but there are definitely points to be made in his favor. Jeremy Morris who ranked “50 greatest college football players this century…”  has Taylor 46th on the list.

Athlon published a list of the “50 best College Football Players of the previous 50 years” in June 2017. Reed was the only Hurricanes player to make the list. Taylor and Reed are among the all-time leaders in Miami football history in various categories of interceptions.

Reed holds the Miami career record with 21 interceptions. Taylor is fifth with 14. Taylor is tied with another Miami great safety Bennie Blades for the single-season record with ten. Reed’s nine interceptions in 2001 and eight in 2000 are third and fifth for a season in UM history.

Reed tied for the Miami team lead in interceptions in 1998 with two and then led them in 2000 and ’01. Taylor led the Hurricanes in INTs the following two seasons. Reed’s four career interception returns for touchdowns are first, Taylor’s three are second.

Reed’s 389 return yards are first in Canes history, Taylor 306 second. It’s difficult to debate that Reed, Taylor and Blades are the three best safeties in school history. That’s a topic for another day.
