The Miami football team’s first day of training camp is in the books. There were plenty of thoughts from Head Coach Mark Richt and the players during the first day of training camp.
The Miami football team opened the first day of training camp in jerseys and shorts according to multiple outlets. The talk of the day centered around the depth charts, injuries and the ongoing construction of the Soffer Indoor Practice Facility.
The Miami football team is expected to stay in jerseys and shorts for the first week of spring practice according to the Palm Beach Post’s Miami Hurricanes Beat Writer Anthony Chiang. Teams may not wear pads during the first few days of training camp per NCAA bylaws.
Despite being in jerseys and shorts the Hurricanes players still went through drills with helmets on. Several Miami football players were practicing after recovering and rehabbing through injuries that occurred during the 2017 season and this Spring.
Junior wide receiver Ahmmon Richards is the most prominent Miami football player returning from injury this season. Richards had an injury-filled 2017. It began with missing the first two games of the season with a hamstring injury. Richards missed the final two games of 2017 with a torn MCL. He only played in seven games in 2017.

Richt spoke about how the opening day of training camp went for the Miami Football team.
"“Pretty typical Day One…It was very evident who has been around this program a while and who is just showing up for the first time… Just in knowing how to practice and knowing how to push, knowing how to do things right, knowing how to finish a drill, knowing the things that we teach on a daily basis that [are] very, very normal to the guys who have been around and new to the guys who are new. They have a long way to go, just to understand how we practice around here. It’s not because they’re not trying. They’re just learning.”"
Players being able to pace themselves and when to push as much as Richt said how to push is vital during training camp. Some of the players were still getting used to practicing in the heat of South Florida on a college football team. Inside the U reported some, but minimal issues with the Heat according to Richt.
"“It was really a great day in that you could feel the humidity and heat…A lot of guys that had great summers came through and did well. A couple of guys had some cramping, which is pretty understandable as hot as it is. It was a pretty typical day one.”"
