The Miami football team’s loss of 2019 verbal commit three-star defensive tackle Denzel Daxon is not a huge de-commitment for the Hurricanes next recruiting class. Daxon’s loss leaves Miami with recent commit Jalar Holley as the only Defensive tackle for 2019.

Daxon’s change of mind opens the door for other defensive tackles considering Miami. Daxon reportedly fell out of favor with new Miami defensive line coach Jess Simpson. Simpson replaced Craig Kuligowski on the Miami football staff after last season. Kuligowski left for the same position with Alabama after the 2017 season.

Daxon out of Carol City High School in Miami is a three-star defensive tackle ranked by 247 Sports as the 730th best player and 46th best defensive tackle nationally and 83rd best player overall in Florida for 2019.

Simpson had spent the entirety of his coaching career in Georgia before accepting the job as the Miami defensive line coach earlier this year. He has been a very successful high school coach in the Atlanta area. Simpson later became an assistant at Georgia State and with the Atlanta Falcons.

Holley is from Buford, Georgia. He is the 831st ranked player overall, the 55th best defensive tackle and the 85th ranked player in Georgia for the Class of 2019. With Head Coach Mark Richt and Simpson’s roots in the Peach State expect that pipeline to continue to be tapped.

Daxon committed to the Miami football program in October 2017. He reportedly had only visited the Hurricanes once this summer and did not attend Miami Nights or Paradise Camp in July according to Andrew Ivins of Inside the U.

Miami also has a commitment from Jason Munoz of St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale. Munoz is one of three St. Thomas players to give a verbal commitment to the Hurricanes for 2019. Four-star linebackers Anthony Solomon and Avery Huff are the other two. Munoz expects to see time at defensive tackle next season.

Daxon’s decision leaves the door open for another defensive tackle to join the Hurricanes 2019 recruiting class. Miami is still recruiting several defensive tackles for 2019. Ivins reported on Monday that Miami is expected to sign Aquinas four-star defensive end Braylen Ingraham who could move to tackle.

The Hurricanes are also recruiting four-star defensive tackles Tyler Davis from Apopka, Florida, Quashon Fuller from Lehigh Akers, Florida and Fort Myers Dunbar’s Derick Hunter. The Miami staff is additionally working on three-star defensive tackles Jason Blissett from New York Poly Prep and Mike Morris from American Heritage.

Daxon still has several options left for where he will decide to play college football. Among the schools reportedly interested are Georgia, Florida, Georgia Tech and Tennessee. All seven schools on his list are in Power Five conferences.
