These scandals go far beyond Miami’s Pell Grant scandal in the 1990’s, Miami’s shame involving Nevin Shapiro or Free Shoes University. Programs have to tread lightly and be as politically correct as possible.

Miami has had a tarnished reputation in it’s past, that is not likely to occur with Mark Richt as the Head Coach. Martinelli’s point is that Florida State needs a new logo regardless of what the Seminole tribe supports.  The debate over what mascot a school should or should not use is a wide-ranging one.

"“While it’s not quite as terrible as Chief Wahoo, this school, at a minimum, needs a new logo, if not a new mascot altogether because Native Americans shouldn’t be mascots. There’s also the possibility this team could outdo itself and lose all its games in the first half of the season instead of just most of them, like in 2017.”"

Martinelli’s final point about what makes Miami so likable is a perfect example of the somewhat folksy and dry sense of humor from Richt. During the 2017 ACC Kickoff Richt explained his ten bite process for the perfect sandwich.

One thing that Richt has seemed to embrace more than any other since returning to South Florida is that he and his team are going to have fun. It’s apparent in nearly everything he does. In several other places fans, coaches and football programs, in general, are so uptight that they take everything seriously.

No one can say anything negative against their team, players or anything having to do with their program. The perspective that sports and football specifically are supposed to be fun often gets lost in the competition to be the best.
