Could future Miami football schedule hinder Playoff hopes?

Miami football won 45-10 at Appalachian State in 2016. The Hurricanes game at Arkansas State last season was canceled due to Hurricane Irma. The Miami Athletic Department and Head Coach Mark Richt chose to allow their players to be with their families instead of traveling to Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Fornelli defined a true non-conference road game by playing on someone else’s campus. Miami had two such games in 2016. In addition to the game against Appalachian State, the Hurricanes also lost at Notre Dame.

The Miami football program has practically skewed the number of non-conference road games for the ACC during the College Football Playoff era. The first two seasons of the College Football Playoff occurred during Al Golden’s final season and a half and a half season from Larry Scott.

Miami lost 41-31 at Nebraska in 2014. A season later the Hurricanes had two non-conference road games. In Golden’s last season they defeated FAU 44-20 in Boca Raton and lost at Cincinnati 34-23.

Last year was the first time that the Miami football team did not have a true non-conference road game since they joined the Big East for the 1991 football season. Before that the Hurricanes were independent.

The ACC has led the Power Five Conference during the Playoff era with an average per football program of 4.64 non-conference road games over the last four seasons. Miami is above the average with five true-non conference games in that time span.
