The Miami Hurricanes did exactly as expected in a blowout win over Savannah State. Good performances all-around contributed in a 77-0 UM victory over the Tigers at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday night.

It’s hard to put much stock into the Miami Hurricanes victory over FCS Savannah State. The Hurricanes matched their highest point total ever and set the school record for margin of victory.

Two previous records were set in a 77-7 victory over Savannah State in 2013. Miami equaled the most points in a game and set the margin of victory in Saturday’s win. Both of those records were set against the Tigers the last time those teams played.

The Tigers lost 52-0 to UAB In their season opener last week and are moving down to Division II in 2019.

Freshman Brevin Jordan shined after failing to catch a pass in his collegiate debut against LSU last week. Jordan caught seven passes for 52 yards and two touchdowns. Redshirt Freshman N’Kosi Perry also showed promise in his first collegiate action. Perry finished nine of 14 for 93 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

As long as we are mentioning turnovers, the turnover chain made its 2018 season debut. It also has a new look. Instead of the iconic U logo, the 2018 version features a gold played Sebastian the Ibis pendant.

A fumble recovery by Trajan Bandy brought out the turnover chain. Interceptions by Sheldrick Redwine and Jhavonte Dean earned encores for the turnover chain.

Miami Hurricanes Sophomore wide receiver Jeff Thomas continued his impressive start to the 2018 season. Thomas caught a pass for a 67-yard touchdown, returned two punts for 90 yards and had a 26-yard kickoff return. He now has 353 all-purpose yards through two games.

After leading just 7-0 at the end of the first quarter the Miami Hurricanes seized control in the game’s second 15-minute stanza. The Hurricanes scored 21 points to take a 28-0 lead at the half.

After a subpar performance against LSU last week, Malik Rosier finished eight of 12 for 131 yards and two touchdowns and added a one-yard touchdown run. Redshirt Freshman Cade Weldon also saw time at quarterback for the Hurricanes. He was one of two for 14 yards and added a 16-yard touchdown run.

After Weldon’s exit, True Freshman Jarren Williams played the last ten plus minutes to close the game for Miami. Williams was one of three for 17 yards and ran twice for two yards and a touchdown.

  • Perry’s entrance into the game after Rosier seems to indicate that he is second on the Hurricanes depth chart. Against a team like Savannah State, it’s difficult to resolve anything in relation to the depth chart. The only exception would be if someone had a poor performance.

Miami’s star of the game on defense was Sophomore defensive end, Jonathan Garvin. Garvin finished with eight tackles, two solo tackles for loss and two assisted tackles for loss that totaled nine yards.

Also making a statement for Miami was True Freshman defensive tackle Nesta Silvera. Silvera showed his brute strength with a bull rush up the middle on the punt team to force a blocked punt. Junior Scott Patchan returned the block ten yards for a touchdown.

Freshman running back Lorenzo Lingard also added two touchdowns on the ground. He finished with four carries for 82 yards. The second of Lingard’s two touchdowns went for 64-yards.

Miami will have its first true road game of 2018 when they travel to Toledo next week to play the Rockets. Miami won last season’s meeting 52-30 at Hard Rock Stadium. Miami had to stage a second half comeback after trailing 16-10 at halftime.
