FIU and the Miami Hurricanes renew their crosstown rivalry on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium. The game against the Panthers is UM’s last non-conference regular season game for 2018.

The Miami Hurricanes host FIU after two consecutive impressive offensive performances over the last two weeks. The 77-0 victory over Savannah State two weeks ago and 49-24 win at Toledo last week combined for the 126 point offensive explosion to set a Miami program record for a two-game span.

The biggest goal for Miami against FIU will be to continue the offensive momentum of the past two weeks and stay healthy five days before beginning ACC play against North Carolina Thursday night at Hard Rock Stadium.

FIU and North Carolina are the first two games of a three-game homestand. Florida State comes to Hard Rock Stadium October 6. Could the Seminoles arrive at Hard Rock Stadium with a 1-4 record and no victories against an FBS opponent this season?

  • As for this Saturday, the Hurricanes and Panthers both enter the game with 2-1 records and losses against Power Five Conference opponents. FIU began the season with a 38-28 home loss to Indiana. Miami rebounded the last two weeks after a season-opening loss to LSU in Arlington, Texas.

FIU’s 2018 wins have been a 28-20 victory at Old Dominion in their Conference USA opener two weeks ago and 63-24 at home over UMass last week. The Panthers conclude their non-conference schedule next week against FCS Arkansas-Pine Bluff at home.

FIU enters the game against Miami 94th in ESPN’s Football Power Index. The Miami Hurricanes are 12th. It’s somewhat hard to understand the rankings. LSU who crushed the Hurricanes opening weekend is 17th.

"ESPN describes the FPI as “a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is."

The index clearly seems to believe that LSU will struggle against a strong schedule going forward. Playing in the ACC Coastal, Miami should have an easier time winning than LSU in the SEC West.
