The Clemson Tigers nearly lost to unranked Syracuse for the second year in a row. They survived behind third-string quarterback Chase Brice. How do the Miami Hurricanes compare?

Both Clemson and the Miami Hurricanes have had games that they were exposed this season. LSU put a whooping on Miami for three quarters before winning 33-17 in the season opener. Clemson had to rally from a ten point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Syracuse 27-23 at home on Saturday afternoon.

At the beginning of summer training camp, Brice was Clemson’s fourth-string quarterback. Hunter Johnson transferred to Northwestern after it was clear he was going to be the third-string quarterback behind Senior Kelly Bryant and True Freshman Trevor Lawrence.

Lawrence was elevated to the starter over Bryant for the Syracuse game. When Dabo Swinney made that decision Bryant decided to leave the team to preserve his last year of eligibility. He will transfer to another school to play a final season in 2019. Lawrence was injured in the second quarter against Syracuse and did not return.

The Tigers sudden lack of depth at quarterback is a clear strength the Miami Hurricanes have over Clemson. Malik Rosier decided to stick it out with Miami after he was demoted to the Hurricanes second-team quarterback. He gives Miami experience and quality depth behind new starter Redshirt Freshman N’Kosi Perry.

Miami also has Redshirt Freshman Cade Weldon and True Freshman Jarren Williams behind Perry and Rosier. When he is the starter Rosier’s inconsistencies come out. As a back up he has the potential to get hot if Perry struggles or gets hurts.

With young quarterbacks under center, both Miami and Clemson will likely rely on their running games and defense to carry them until the quarterbacks become more comfortable. The Hurricanes and Tigers were able to do that in their wins this weekend.
