The Miami Hurricanes moved up one spot to 16th in the AP Media Poll and two spots to 15th in the USA Today Coaches poll following Saturday’s exhilarating 28-27 victory over Florida State.

The polls were shaken up by a multitude of upsets on Saturday and the Miami Hurricanes benefitted slightly. Miami’s move in the polls continues their attempt to get back into the top ten. The Hurricanes fell from eighth into the twenties after a 33-17 season-opening loss to LSU.

Miami inexplicably fell to from 16th to 17th in both polls last week despite defeating North Carolina 47-10 behind the defense forcing six turnovers and scoring three touchdowns.

Miami faced falling completely out of the polls on Saturday after falling behind Florida State 27-7 in the third quarter. Another dominant defensive performance with two turnovers deep in the Seminoles territory set up the Hurricanes offense twice in the red zone in the third quarter.

  • Touchdown passes from N’Kosi Perry to Lawrence Cager and Jeff Thomas brought Miami within 27-21. Perry then connected with Brevin Jordan for a 41-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter for the eventual game-winner.

Kentucky, Auburn and Stanford all fell below Miami in both polls after losses on Saturday. Texas moved up ten spots in the AP Poll to ninth and five in the Coaches Poll to 14th passing Miami after upsetting Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

Florida moved up eight spots in the AP Poll to 14th to pass the Hurricanes. The Gators are 16th, one spot below Miami in the Coaches Poll.

Virginia Tech completely tumbled out of the poll after losing 45-23 at home to Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish outscored the Hokies 28-7 in the second half. Virginia Tech falling out of the polls means Miami has no teams left on their regular season schedule in the rankings.

The Hurricanes could potentially play fourth-ranked Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. The Tigers won 63-3 at Wake Forest. North Carolina State who is 6-0 moved up to 20th in the AP and 19th in the Coaches Poll. Clemson, Miami and the Wolfpack are the only three teams in the ACC in the rankings.

NC State plays at Clemson in two weeks after both are off next weekend. That game is likely to determine the winner of the ACC Atlantic Division. It would help Miami greatly if that is Clemson.
