The Miami Hurricanes loss to Virginia this past Saturday brought out a lot of Sunday morning quarterbacks. Many fans and media questioned if Mark Richt was proficient enough as a play caller, Offensive Coordinator and Head Coach.

Among the proposals that fans had on Social Media were that Miami Hurricanes Defensive Coordinator Manny Diaz would make a better Head Coach than Mark Richt. Diaz has never been a Head Coach at any level, but he has had an outstanding career as a Defensive Coordinator at the FBS level.

Being a Head Coach encompasses many things. First and foremost if you have to be a leader of young men just coming into their own. Nurturing and mentoring them to improve as human beings and football players is vital. Being a Collegiate Head Coach is akin to being the General Manager, Head Coach and President of the franchise.

Diaz seems to be more than just the Defensive Coordinator. He is essentially the Head Coach of the Miami Hurricanes Defense. Mark Richt seems to allow Diaz total autonomy of the defense. In their three years together running their hometown team, Diaz’s side of the ball has been far more successful.

In two and a half seasons, Diaz defense has allowed over 30 points five times. That comes out to about twice per year. Through seven games this season the Miami Hurricanes lead the nation in total defense.  The Miami offense has regressed since Mark Richt took over and is 77th in total offense this season.

Miami Hurricanes fans on Social Media have pleaded for Richt to relinquish the play calling, get a new Offensive Coordinator and/or Quarterbacks Coach. With his son Jon the Quarterbacks Coach and Thomas Brown who was a running back for Richt at Georgia as the OC don’t expect any of the above to happen.
